5 Free Places to Visit in San Francisco

San Francisco can be expensive, but exploring the city doesn’t have to be. These five spots offer great views, interesting neighborhoods, and plenty to enjoy without paying an entrance fee.

🌉 Golden Gate Bridge

A trip to San Francisco wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Golden Gate Bridge. Walk across it or enjoy the views from the beach—either way, you’ll get a memorable travel photo without spending money on admission.

📍 Backpacker tip: Head to the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center for a great photo of the bridge. Bring a jacket, as the wind can feel chilly even when the sun is out.

Location: Golden Gate Bridge Plaza, San Francisco.

🦭 Pier 39

At Pier 39, you can stroll along the waterfront, enjoy views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge, and spend some time watching sea lions lounge on the docks. Between their naps and noisy barking, they tend to steal the show.

There are also restaurants and food stands, but if you’re keeping costs down, the best part is free: walking around the pier and enjoying the views.

📍 Backpacker tip: Many sea lions head south to breed in June and July. Some stay behind, but you may see fewer during those months.

⛰️ Twin Peaks

If you want a panoramic photo of San Francisco, Twin Peaks is a great stop. These two hills offer sweeping city views without an entrance fee—as long as the fog lets you see them!

You can get there by car or take public transportation to save money. One option is to get off at Forest Hill Station and continue on foot. Just be ready for an uphill walk to the viewpoint.

📍 Backpacker tip: If you drive, take your bags and valuables with you. During my visit, I saw two cars with windows smashed after break-ins. It’s better to carry your belongings so you can enjoy the views with peace of mind.

🏮 Chinatown

Walking through Chinatown reveals another side of San Francisco. Between the Chinese-language signs, shops, and smells drifting out of restaurants, you can easily spend a while exploring without spending anything.

It’s the oldest Chinatown in North America and a place to discover part of the history of the city’s Chinese community. Beyond taking photos, slow down and notice everyday life around its businesses, schools, and parks.

📍 Backpacker tip: You don’t need to buy anything to enjoy the neighborhood. Explore on foot, and if a restaurant catches your eye, check the menu and prices before heading inside.

🌳 Presidio of San Francisco

Close to the Golden Gate Bridge, the Presidio is a huge park where you can walk, exercise, or take a break from sightseeing. If you’re traveling on a budget, bring something to eat and enjoy the outdoors without paying an entrance fee.

A good stop is Presidio Tunnel Tops, with green spaces and views of the bay. You can also visit the nearby Palace of Fine Arts, where walking around the gardens and lagoon is free.

The Walt Disney Family Museum is inside the Presidio, although museum admission costs extra.

📍 Backpacker tip: Take advantage of Presidio GO, a free shuttle connecting downtown San Francisco with the park. It also has a route within the Presidio—a handy way to save money and rest your legs. Check the routes and schedules before you go.
